DVD Description

The feverish spectacle of a summer camp for evangelical Christian kids is the focus of Jesus Camp, a fascinating if sometimes alarming documentary. (Shortly after its release, the movie gained a new notoriety when Ted Haggard, president of the National Association of Evangelicals, who appears near the end of the film, resigned his post amid a male prostitute's allegations of drug use and sexual misconduct.) For most of the film, we follow a charismatic teacher, Becky Fischer, as she trains young soldiers in "God's Army" at a camp in North Dakota. Some of the kids emerge as likable and bright, and eager to continue their work as pint-sized preachers; elsewhere, the visions of children speaking in tongues and falling to the floor in ecstasy are more troubling. Even more arresting is the vision of a generation of children home-schooled to believe that the Bible is science, or Fischer's certainty that America's flawed system of democracy will someday be replaced by a theocracy. (In one scene, a cardboard cut-out of George W. Bush is presented to the children, who react by laying their hands on the figure as though in a religious procession.) Filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady maintain neutrality about all this, maybe too much so (they throw in some interviews with radio host Mike Papantonio to provide a liberal-Christian viewpoint) and one would like to know more about the grown-ups presented here. Power broker Haggard is the creepiest person in the film, an insincere smooth talker whose advice to one of the young would-be campgoers comes across as entirely cynical. Time will tell whether the film's Christian soldiers will be marching onward. --Robert Horton

Sad

It is so sad kids are abused like this and become addicted to this harmful drug only being happy when they get their fix. It is heartwrenching.

A Blessing from God, delivered by children

This documentary is wonderful and inspiring. Warning: the contents in this DVD could change you from the inside out, so be careful, because you might be a different person after you view this film. The number one star in this film is God, and his faithful servant Becky Fischer is doing a wonderful job here on earth, teaching the children how to be equipped when they go out into the world. I would love to meet this lady some day. There are three special children who were chosen to teach you different things,as you will see, when you watch this film. But you will have to allow the Holy Spirit to work inside of you, like I did, for this to happen. Each one of them approaches things a little differently, and in that way, you learn. I learned from all three, but, Levi, well he just blasted me. His unconditional love for God is unwavering, and I hope that I live long enough to see him when he is all grown, because I believe that God has something special for him later on in his life, and I want to be here to see it when it happens. I will say, that I just had to get an orange T-Shirt with JESUS on the front of it, just like the one he wears in the movie, and I wear it proudly wherever I go. I just want to thank everyone who had something to do with making this wonderful film. My prayer is that it will touch many thousands of people all over the world.

this is more than just a shadow of 1984!

This film for me was a bit scary. having read Orwell's works, not to mention the length of time they have been in the public domain, it surprises me that no lessons have been learned regarding social trends or political ideologies in regards to our present society. Now, there will be plenty of pointed fingers in regard to the details of this film, should there be a clear(er) dividing line between church and state? You know, I thought there WAS already!

The level of indoctrination was (as it appeared to me) total. There was nowhere these kids could go where they would be safe from this type of brain-washing. Yes, their parents ARE well-meaning, they love their children, but please....a cult is a cult.

The fact that Becky Fischer REALLY believes in what she's doing is admirable, but this country was founded on the platform of certain freedoms, but brain-washing and indoctrination aren't it. Now we're being led to believe that if we do not prescribe to these precepts, we will be labeled as outcasts and not righteous enough to enter heaven, not to mention evil enough to be eliminated in whatever way they choose societally!

This film was a real eye-opener. There REALLY are people this deranged out there teaching CHILDREN!! Fischer uses the excuse that islamic children are taught at an early age to fight, so what she does to these kids is justified by god??!!!

I have read all the reviews for this film as a basis for purchasing it for my own library. This film was made with an objective eye to the subject matter. I can find no fault with it's presentation. I just find it very sad that these children are indoctrinated with this belief that the all powerful GOD is a vengeful one, not a loving one.
