Good stuff for Bears' fans
This 2 DVD set is a lot of fun for Bears' fans--whether young or old.
Maybe best of all is the "History" segment. This is "hog heaven" for Bears' fans. It begins at the start, with George Halas and a handful of stalwarts creating the National Football League (in a Hupmobile dealership). This tells the story of the Bears from that first year (as the Decatur Staleys) through the early 2000s (ending before their NFC championship in 2006).
Here's the story--Halas as coach through Abe Gibron to Lovie Smith. Midle linebackers from Bill George to Dick Butkus (one forgets how awesome he was until seeing replays as on this CD) to Mike Singletary to Brian Urlacher. Running backs from "Red" Grange to Bronko Nagurski to Gale Sayers to Walter Payton to Neal Anderson. Quarterbacks from. . . . Hmmm. Maybe Sid Luckman as a great, with Billy Wade and Jim McMahon as good QBs. Defensive linemen. Nice to see shots of "The Tree," Doug Atkins and others. And the championship games. That 73-0 licking of the Washington team in 1940. The 1963 game. And so on. Not a bad history at all. Maybe the most satisfying part of this set.
One missing element from the history: A good rendition of "Bear Down, Chicago Bears," the team's song. It's a rousing anthem and showed up only most fleetingly.
Other special features: a segment focusing on the 1985 Super Bowl champs; special features on a variety of people, from Willie Gallimore to Doug Atkins to Rick Casares to Mike Ditka, to Ed O'Bradovich to William Perry. Some of the selections, though, are mystifying. Abe Gibron? Bears' mascot? Bobby Douglass (I loved his style, but he was so erratic!)? It would have been nice to see longer features on such noteworthys as Bill George, Steve McMichael, Dick Butkus, and so on.
All in all, though, a lot of fun for Bears' fans. We've suffered through a lot of poor teams since the 1960s, but the champagne years have been treasures for us.
Chicago Bears-The Complete History 10 Stars+++++++++
By far, one of the best DVDs I watched!!! Very very interesting and entertaining. You don't have to be a Bears fan to enjoy it, just a football fan who likes the history of the game and all those great players of the past. I will watch it again and plan to get the Complete History DVD's of some of the other NFL teams.
Subtitle included? (Ignore the star rating because I'm asking a question before purchasing the item)
Hi, My dad is deaf and he is a hard core Chicago Bear fan. I thought this DVD would make an excellent gift for my father. I am hoping that this DVD has subtitles or captioning for the hearing impaired in it so my dad would not miss any narrative and historical information of those football players.
