| DVD Description Sometimes it's hard to tell if The Mask (or Jim Carrey's in-your-face mugging in general) is actually funny, or just bizarre and grotesque. And sometimes it just doesn't matter. Carrey plays a shy, Jerry Lewis-like nerd who discovers an ancient mask that magically transforms him into a green-faced, zoot-suited Tex Avery cartoon character with no inhibitions. As Roger Ebert said of Carrey in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, the actor performs "as if he's being clocked on an Energy-O-Meter, and paid by the calorie expended." If that's your kind of humor, you'll love The Mask; if not, you may need a valium or two to sit through this one. --Jim Emerson |

Don't forget the dog!!! Like others reviewing this DVD I am not a big Jim Carey fan. He does create a sympathetic character in this movie. This is the first movie that I remember seeing Cameron Diaz and her beauty in this film is breathtaking. For me however an unmentioned hero in other reviews is the dog. The dog saves the day and actually gets the mask on his face and then everybody has to Watch Out! The film is worth a watch. :-)
Career Launcher! This is the movie that put Jim Carrey on the map. Excellent story of a whimpy guy, who takes on the dashing personality of mask each time he puts it on. There is slapstick, contortions only Carrey can make, romance, and plenty of humor!
The perfect Jim Carrey vehicle Jim Carrey is a Loony Tune, a Fractured Flicker, an animated "take" brought to life. Exploit this with great sight gags, witty repartee, physical agility, wolf calls, a catchy marimba number (Cuban Pete)-- this has to be the perfect and best Jim Carrey vehicle.
Great supporting cast -- the sultry Tina (Cameron Diaz), the greasy ganster Tyrell (Peter Green), the under appreciated cop Kellaway (Peter Riegert), the treacherous "Ask Peggy" (Amy Yasbeck), the rip-off Ripley Brothers (Tim Bagley of Monk fame, and Johnny Williams), and the sometimes exploitive "best buddy" (Richard Jeni) all turn in admirable performances. And let's not forget "Milo", the wonderdog, whose mask-enhanced performance is the perfect companion for Carrey with or without the mask.
A great flick with overlookable flaws (e.g. Rieget's mispeak "20-ought buckshot"). Enjoy the ride. It's fun. |
