| DVD Description The 2004 version of Around the World in 80 Days is an entertaining hodge-podge of adventure, comedy, and scenery from across the globe. Phileas Fogg (Steve Coogan, 24 Hour Party People), an obsessively precise inventor, bets that he can circumnavigate the planet in 80 days--considered impossible in the Victorian era. In this version, Jackie Chan plays a Chinese peasant who retrieves a stolen idol from the Bank of England, then convinces Fogg to hire him as a French valet so that Chan can get back to his village. Chan supplies numerous spectacular fights against the forces trying to stop Fogg or get the idol, while Coogan is both funny and a surprisingly appealing romantic lead (he flirts with a fetching French painter who joins them). The various episodes--featuring cameos by Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Cleese, Owen Wilson, and Sammo Hung--are uneven, but a goofy good cheer prevails. --Bret Fetzer |

A Nice diversion and a lot of fun Despite the obvious narrative away from the Jules verne classic. Steve Coogan and Jaquie Chan are really a winning team in an unashamedly, determinedly old fashioned romp. Traditionalists may not be happy, those seeking a deviation however, from some of the preteen mind controlled garbage served up as family offerings these days will undoubtedly welcome it as I did. There are a few surprise guess stars along the way but I have to say Steve Coogan delivers an absolutely charismatic performance.
Disney 80 Days Are More Fun I cant actually believe someone said stick to the original. Let me say up front my wife and I are in our 50s. Next let me point out I just re-rented the original so we could see it again. Although it has reasonable acting and beautiful scenery, we were so bored by the end of the first disc, we didnt bother to watch the second disc. I immediately returned both so we could rent this one. We had seen parts of this on TV. It has more action and is much shorter, so it wont bore you to tears like the other one. Sorry but I will take this Disney version over the original or the Pierce Brosnan version any day.
Great Kids Movie My grandkids are Jackie Chan fans, (of course so am I) and I was looking for a good movie they could watch without a lot of bad language and violence. This movie had everything I could ask for, great action, comedy and enough adult fare to keep me interested. The kids and I both loved it! |
