DVD Description

Arnold Schwarzenegger works the crowds, plots strategies for defeating multiple opponents, shares his parents' values with the press, and inspires legions of admirers with his resolute optimism about the future. And all of this long before he decided to run for governor of California, in 1977's hit documentary, Pumping Iron. Larger than life, though not necessarily larger than his rivals for the Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia bodybuilding titles (especially a young Lou Ferrigno, hot on Arnold's competitive trail but much less interesting), Schwarzenegger still comes across, at age 28, as a consummate politician, smart, likable, and crafty about exploiting others' psychological weaknesses. The film still feels redundant (there's only so much beefcake the human eye will tolerate), but the emotional dramas--the unrewarded hard work, the unanswered hopes--are compelling. Complete with a revealing 2003 interview with Schwarzenegger and a reunion of the film's bodybuilders and director. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews

Pumping Iron 25 year Anniversary

Afer watching a poor copy on VHS for 25 years, it is a pleasure to own a crystal clear DVD version. The 25th Anniversary Edition includes insightful and candid interviews that help put this classic into perspective. What a bonus it is to see some of the stars as they are today, discussing the impact of this wonderful film on their lives and the lives of the fans. Pumping Iron never fails to motivate me to go to the gym, and this new version entertains and motivates while adding another dimension to the experience. This is storytelling at its finest.

Pumping Iron Revue

Excellent! Inspirational! Filmed at a time when Body Building was about proportions as well as size. Arnold was undoubtedly the King of Body Building because he matched size with PERFECT proportions. These days it seems size is the only criteria, and as a result bodies are grotesque.I had the movie on videotape, but the revised copy on DVD is vastly superior......................Boyd Clifton.

Pumping Iron Review

Look, I personally think Arnold Scwarzenegger is awesome and while many people know him from his films which I actually like very much especially his earlier ones where his physical prowess was more played up I actually think he is the most incredible body builder of all time and getting to see a behind the scenes look was great.
