| DVD Description Originally made for TV in 1977, this in-depth (six hours plus) version of Jesus' life is so thorough that the first hour is devoted solely to the story of his birth. The film doesn't skimp on some of the other landmark events of this famous story either. Director Franco Zeffirelli gives more than 12 minutes screen time each to the Last Supper and the Crucifixion. Passages of the Bible are quoted verbatim, the locations have a Palestine-like authenticity, and, aside from some of the principals (Robert Powell as Jesus, Olivia Hussey as Mary, and Stacy Keach as Barabbas), many of the non-Roman characters are actually played by Semitic-looking actors. Zeffirelli diligently provides the sociopolitical background that gave rise to Jesus' following and the crisis in belief it caused for the people of Israel (and one or two Romans). While not graphic by today's standards, some of the scenes--baby boys being ripped from their mothers' arms and slaughtered, nails being driven into Jesus' hands--may disturb young and/or sensitive children. --Kimberly Heinrichs |

Most wonderful version of the life of Christ This is the one movie version of the life, death and resurrection of Christ that I have truly loved watching. I would recommend watching Jesus of Nazareth by anyone who truly wishes to learn more of the story of His birth, life, and interaction with His disciples--and how He was so cruelly crucified, ultimately for all of mankind's sake--then, who wish to thrill at how death could not overpower and contain Him, because they believe Him to actually be Who He claimed to be--the Son of the Living God.
GREATEST FILM EVER ON THE LIFE OF CHRIST: but the DVD transfer disappointing Even after thirty years, Franco Zeffirelli's "Jesus of Nazareth" remains the greatest film on the life of Christ ever made. I can honestly say watching this film 30 years ago changed my life. I'd easily give it five stars, but the DVD transfer was INCREDIBLY DISAPPOINTING. As another reviewer said, I felt like I was just watching an old VHS tape (which I already own).
Best Movie EVER on the Life of Christ!! I saw this movie when it was first aired on TV in 1977, and I have never forgotten it. I was absolutely overwhelmed by it! The acting, the direction by Zefferelli, the complexity of the background to Jesus's life--everything about this movie is incomparable! Yes, it is very long (six hours!!) but I promise you, it is worth every minute!! If I could only suggest one movie about the life of Christ to anyone, this is WITHOUT QUESTION the one I would recommend! It brings first-century Palestine to life so vividly, and the story is so incredibly moving (not to mention the acting, particularly by Robert Powell in the role of Christ) that I guarantee it will be a movie you will want to watch over and over. It is SUPERB, REVERENT movie-making--you cannot watch it without being moved to tears! If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would!!! |
