| DVD Description A minor classic from Disney, this 1973 all-animal, all-animated musical version of the familiar story is more charming than one might expect. Perhaps it's the warm, chummy take on key relationships within the legend--the way Robin Hood (Brian Bedford) gets twitterpated whenever the subject of Maid Marian (Monica Evans) comes up or the way best pal Little John (Phil Harris voicing a variation on his own Baloo from The Jungle Book) admonishes the Sherwood Forest hero, "Aw, Rob, why dontcha just marry the girl?" (Then, of course, there's the canny "casting" of the romantic leads as foxes: Robin the sly one and Marian the, well, foxy one.) The rest of the vocal cast is lively and eclectic: Peter Ustinov, Andy Devine, Terry-Thomas, George Lindsey. Roger Miller provides the songs and voice for the minstrel character Allan-A-Dale. The film is ably directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, whose decades of work in Disney's animation division helped create the studio's rich legacy. --Tom Keogh |

A Great Disney Classic This is one that you can enjoy with your family. Excellent story, great classic Disney drawings and beutiful soundtack. This is for the Disney lovers that actually can appreciate the timeless art of drawing, a must for any collection a 10 out of 10.
Cute--Not one of my favorite Disney movies but . . . It's cute. Even a little sacharine. But it's Disney and classic. A fun family movie. (I still prefer Errol Flynn's version though.)
Not as good as I remember Embarrassingly enough, I had this taped off the TV, many years ago, and I watched it religiously. I also had on that tape this random cartoon about what Father Christmas did the other 364 days of the year. Happy memories!
But getting this on DVD, and staying up late to watch it (something I would never have been allowed to do all those years ago), I just didn't enjoy it as much. I don't remember much of the ending, cos I ended up texting a friend on my phone. And this is one of the few Disney movies which has terrible animation. Even the characters - and the character voices incidentally - are directly lifted from other Disney classics. Look out for Little John, who's basically Baloo with clothes on and he's voiced by the exact same actor!
The storyline's pretty basic, and I'm pretty disappointed. I'm still giving it three stars, because of the happy memories I had of it, but it's just not as good now as it was then. What a shame. |
