DVD Description

As with Star Wars, the George Lucas-produced Indiana Jones trilogy was not just a plaything for kids but an act of nostalgic affection toward a lost phenomenon: the cliffhanging movie serials of the past. Episodic in structure and with fate hanging in the balance about every 10 minutes, the Jones features tapped into Lucas's extremely profitable Star Wars formula of modernizing the look and feel of an old, but popular, story model. Steven Spielberg directed all three films, which are set in the late 1930s and early '40s: the comic book-like Raiders of the Lost Ark, the spooky, Gunga Din-inspired Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and the cautious but entertaining Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Fans and critics disagree over the order of preference, some even finding the middle movie nearly repugnant in its violence. (Pro-Temple of Doom people, on the other hand, believe that film to be the most disarmingly creative and emotionally effective of the trio.) One thing's for sure: Harrison Ford's swaggering, two-fisted, self-effacing performance worked like a charm, and the art of cracking bullwhips was probably never quite the iconic activity it soon became after Raiders. Supporting players and costars were very much a part of the series, too--Karen Allen, Sean Connery (as Indie's dad), Kate Capshaw, Ke Huy Quan, Amrish Puri, Denholm Elliot, River Phoenix, and John Rhys-Davies among them. Years have passed since the last film (another is supposedly in the works), but emerging film buffs can have the same fun their predecessors did picking out numerous references to Hollywood classics and B-movies of the past. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews

He's back!

Absolutely fantastic DVD set of the movies that I watched as a kid. I always wanted to Indiana Jones, and I followed in his path in many ways. The DVDs provide the original movies but the DVD extras showing the creation of each film was sensational. This is a great gift for the Indy fan in all of us or for someone who has never (may they be forgiven) seen them.

Great as a set.

These movies can stand alone, but as a set are definately awesome. This box set is a must have for any action/adventure fan like me. As for the transfers, well, they seem fine to me not 100% perfect, but hey they're a lot better than most movies out there that have very crappy transfers (and I'm talking about the newer films). Oh, and this is for cry baby Clyde Bouley "CWB", get over it. Anyway enjoy these now because in one or two yrs the new Indy movie is coming out and there's no guarantee that this will get a better transfer any time soon. ENJOY!

Classic Movie Series From The 1980s

I was born in 1977, so I saw Indiana Jones and Star Wars at the same time during the early 1980s, but a couple years after the movies already came out. I remember these great action movies as well as Romancing the Stone and other classics.

The things that inspired me to buy this DVD collection were twofold: (1) the price for four (4) discs was around $35 - that is reasonable; and (2) all three movies are classics. (It always amazed me how George Lucas could make a classic and then make the sequels into classics. The man is highly gifted, obviously.)

I am also one of those people that believes everything I ever watched on a TV set or a movie screen should be put onto a DVD disc and put into my rotisserie. Nowadays we are finding sitcoms (their seasons) on DVD, old movies that were almost thought to die on VHS, and of course the stellar movies that made an easy transition into DVD.

This format is great because of its durability and quality. Gone are the days of tape, and that - coupled with a reasonable price - moved me to drop the cash almost on impulse for this great collection.

The bonus DVD is also a nice toast to the collection, as well. I always enjoy watching how, when, and where these great films were made.

I highly recommend this great collection if you have already experienced George Lucas' works and don't already own all three movies on DVD.
