| VHS Tape Description Some people may sneer at this 1965 musical, but the truth is the film has earned its status as a perennially watchable romantic-drama, largely on the strength of a fun story and chemistry between stars Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. Veteran filmmaker Robert Wise (The Day the Earth Stood Still) mostly stays out of the way of the film's appealing elements, which include a based-on-fact tale of Austria's von Trapp family, who fled their Nazi-occupied country in 1938. Andrews is delightful and even fascinating as Maria, who sheds her tomboyish ways as a novice nun to accept the mantle of adulthood, becoming matron of the motherless von Trapp clan. Plummer is matinee-idol handsome and gives a smart performance to boot, and the cast of young people and kids who make up the singing von Trapp children make a strong impression. Based on the Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical, the score includes such winners as "Maria" and the future John Coltrane hit "My Favorite Things." --Tom Keogh |

Great edition with great extras I've found that a lot of special edition DVDs lack something in the extras, and usually wonder why you bothered paying more for extras you have no interest in. That wasn't the case with this one. Not only was the quality of the movie and sound fantastic, but I also loved the extras. One of my favorites was the interview with the original actors who played the Von Trapp children - it was a lot of fun to see how they grew up. It was also nice to see Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer together, although I think it would have been fantastic if they could have gotten them together with the children as well. The documentary with Charmienne Carr was really adorable too. This one is definitely worth the extra money for a second disc.
All-time Favorite I was delighted to find this 40th Anniversary Editon of one of my all-time favorite movies. The 2-disc set not only contains the movie itself, there are interviews with the original actors as they are now. it was great fun to see the children all grown up. And the section where Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer reminisce is priceless.
If you liked the movie the first time around, be sure to grab this new edition to add to your DVD collection.
Awesome! I'm such a huge fan of The Sound of Music and Julie Andrews in particular. This is a great compilation and the mastering is awesome! |
