| VHS Tape Description The title episode features the band of strange-haired 9-year-olds from the Nickelodeon series sorting out the familiar giving-versus-greed debate of Christmas. Consumer-minded Helga searches for the perfect present to impress Arnold while he searches for the lost daughter of his friend, Southeast Asian immigrant Mr. Hyunh. Helga gets some "really boss" snow boots as an early gift, while Arnold strikes a deal with a government official who will search for the daughter if Arnold can find a pair of... you guessed it--snow boots. This double episode crams a lot of goodwill and redemption into its brief 26 minutes. Also included is a bonus 11-minute episode, "Snow Day," which features a dutiful Arnold helping out his landlord grandfather while his friends frolic in the snow. Will Arnold get a chance to have fun before the snow melts? Just leave it to Grandpa. The themes are aimed at grade-schoolers, but preschoolers will enjoy watching animated big kids in action. --Kimberly Heinrichs |

why not dvd format? we watch this every year! We love it - but wish it was a DVD!!!!!
Extraordinary quality in a small package These two episodes of the endearing Hey Arnold series are just what Mr. Claus ordered for a holiday evening in front of the old vcr. The first, "Arnold's Christmas", is touching to say the least and finds Arnold and friend, Gerald, trying their best to turn a good deed for Mr. Hyunh after Arnold learns that he hasn't seen his daughter in about 20 years. When all seems lost Arnold's secret admirer, Helga, comes to the rescue due to her great affection for Armold. This episode more than any other sticks out in my mind as I watched this with my children when it first aired at Christmas time. Now it is part of my classics for Christmas collection.
Episode II is titled Snow Day. Arnold's city has been blanketed with white powdery snow making the streets a playground for all, except Arnold, who is engaged in helping his grandpa do various chores while the other children are at play. Grandpa has a flashback to his own childhood and realizes that Arnold needs a "play ethic" as well as a good work ethic. This is a very enjoyable episode and I'm glad it was included on the tape. This entire series needs to be put on dvd and offered to the public. There are so many wonderful episodes and each one is entertaining to both old and young alike.
Poignant I am not one for too much mush, but Arnold's Christmas episode is touching. The subtle undertones in this cartoon are great, especially the love-hate relationship Helga has for Arnold. I think adults will enjoy this as much as kids. The episodes on this VHS are some of Hey Arnold!'s best work. |
