DVD Description

Adam Sandler fans are sure to enjoy this no-brainer comedy, but everyone else is strongly advised to proceed with caution. Before scoring a more enjoyable hit with his 1998 comedy The Wedding Singer, the former Saturday Night Live goofball played Happy Gilmore, a hot-tempered guy whose dreams of hockey stardom elude him. But when he discovers his gift for driving golf balls hundreds of yards, he joins a pro tour to win the prize money needed to rescue his beloved grandma's home from IRS repossession. The trouble is, Happy's not so happy. He's got a temper that frequently flares on the golf course (he even dukes it out with celebrity golfer Bob Barker), but a retired golf pro (Carl Weathers) and a compassionate publicist (Julie Bowen) help him to perfect his putting game and adjust his confrontational attitude. How much you enjoy this lunacy depends on your tolerance for Sandler's loudmouthed schtick and a shocking number of blatant product-placement endorsements, but if you're looking for broad comedy you've come to the right teeoff spot. --Jeff Shannon

Some Things That All Golfers Wish They Could Do....Sort Of!

A "pro" golfer duking it out with veteran game-show host Bob Barker right in the middle of a tournament. That scene alone makes this one of the more memorable comedies of the last 30 years. Almost everyone I know has either seen or heard of that scene and everyone laughs at it.

It IS ludicrous and that's what makes it so funny. In fact, most of the movie is totally preposterous, totally unbelievable and totally wacky, which is Adam Sandler's trademark in these comedies. He's low key but violent, as he was in Mr. Deeds, Punch-Drunk Love and a few other films.

Here, Sander is even more vocal and violent than normal and definitely more crude, which is saying something since this actor usually doesn't play guys with a lot of class. "Happy" is a hot-tempered hockey player who can hit a golf ball 400 yards so he tries his hand on the PGA tour to help raise money for his grandmother. I just shake my head even writing that last sentence, it sounds so stupid....but this is a stupid movie with an incredibly stupid story but is hilarious, for the most part.

Anyone who is a golfer would appreciate this movie more than others, because Sandler says and does things we'd all like to do on the links at times but, thankfully, don't. In short: this is a crude but very funny movie.

You eat WHAT for breakfast?

I dunno what it is, but "Happy Gilmore" is the only Adam Sandler vehicle I've ever even found remotely watchable, let alone genuinely funny. Mebbe it's `cuz he toned down that hackneyed obnoxious smart-ass schtick of his to a level that's actually tolerable, and is even occasionally funny. Mebbe it's `cuz I found a few of the comedic scenes genuinely funny, and not just headachingly annoying. Or it could be the fact that Sandler threw Carl Weathers a bone after that gawdawful "Action Jackson" flick, and cast him in a role here that's fleetingly reminiscent of Weathers' role in "Rocky III." (what a charitable guy!)

But for my money, the deal-sealer has to be the scene where Bob Barker lays the beat-down on The Happy One. I love putting this particular scene on a loop, and watching it over and over again. With each new viewing of the beat-down, I imagine Barker screaming with each blow struck, "THIS (*right cross to the face*) is for `Little Nicky'! and THIS (*groin kick*) is for `Billy Madison'! And what the HELL were you thinking when you agreed to do `The Waterboy'?! (*withering array of heavy blows to the solar plexus*)"

Now if THAT ain't entertaining shiznit, I dunno what is.

"The Price is Wrong, Bitch!"

Happy Gilmore, brings to the screen the story of a rejected hockey player who joins the PGA tour in order to win the prize and buy his grandmother's house back from the IRS.
It is a funny movie, guaranteed to provide more than a just a few laughs. The casting is excellent, and the story is very well written and very well presented.
Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, Frances Bay, and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100%, but it's Ben Stiller that really steals the show for me! Their great talent and chemistry clearly shows, thus providing an entertaining film that can be watched over and over again.
Overall, Happy Gilmore is definitely worth watching, and even though quite silly at times, it will surely put you in a good mood!
