DVD Description

Delivering exactly what its title promises, this celebration of stupidity was Jim Carrey's 1994 follow-up to Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask. The film pairs the rubber- faced wacky man with Jeff Daniels as the not-so-dynamic duo of Lloyd and Harry, dunderheads who come into the possession of a briefcase containing ransom money that is intended for Mob-connected kidnappers. Lauren Holly costars as the woman who lost the briefcase, and with whom Carrey falls in love (both in real life and as his moronic on-screen character). As Lloyd and Harry make a mad dash to return the briefcase (never aware of its contents), the bumbling buddies attract Mobsters, cops, and trouble galore. This lowbrow laugh-a-thon scores some solid hits for hilarity, but with gags involving ill-fated parakeets, buxom bimbos, and an overdose of laxatives, be prepared to put your brain--and good taste--on hold. --Jeff Shannon

A Fall Family Classic

If fish had wings, then Jim Carrey would be able to fly. Not really sure what that's supposed to mean, but it sounded like something some old prophet would say, and old prophets are da bomb, so why not attach your credibility to one by quoting something from them. I like fortune cookies.

Gettin born in the state of Mississippi, Poppa was a copper and momma was a hippie.

So really, it's not that debatable as to whether or not Jeff Daniels is just as funny as Jim Carrey here, because he really does hold his own against the 20-million-dollar-man in his prime. And to sock that owl square in the eye with a champagne supernover cork from across the room, all in just one single take I've heard; that's simply amazing.

The only thing I didn't like was how they dressed up that van to look like a dog; I mean, we viewers are able to suspend our belief systems to quite an exaggerated degree these days - but this? No way. I really don't understand how people can accept the dog van, and just sit there and continue with the rest of the film. It was just too much to take. WAY over the top; upsetting to children, and against all of the values of the christian right. Plus the highway patrolman on a MOTORCYCLE??? Come on, motorcycles weren't even invented until 2002. Get with it Farrelly Brothers.

Overall though, this was a landmark film in the area of creating funny things. Because there's a lot of them here, I counted them one time and there were over three hundred and twenty-five. There actually may be more, but I didn't really feel like doing a re-count because I was too busy watching the movie. Maybe you'd like to do a re-count and post any suggestions for edits here.

Also, cheese was invented while this film was being shot. Just one of those little poop-up video snippit tidbits I picked up while watching "He-Man and She-Ra's Christmas Special". Have a splendid evening.

The rated version was better!

They took out some scenes in this movie for a reason. They should've left it that way. Some of the scenes dragged on, which took away from the enjoyment of the first one. And there were some scnenes that were just not necessary. Once my fiance and I (who are not squeamish or prudish by any means) saw the bathroon scene with CJ (I think? the trucker as the diner)and saw him grab his hairy crotch, we stopped the movie. Just didn't need to see that.

Hilariously Funny!

"Dumb & Dumber" has stood the test of time. It's 13 years old and still ranks as many people's favorite comedy, or at least in their favorites somewhere. Not surprising, since it is hysterically funny and (along with Ace Ventura) made Jim Carrey a superstar! This review is for the recently released Unrated edition, which actually features a few minutes of new material. Some of it simply doesn't work (like the extended "Death of Petey" scene), but little things dispersed throughout the film work splendidly. Carrey plays Lloyd Christmas, a limo driver in Rhode Island who drives Mary Swanson (Lauren Holly) to the airport. She's there to return to Aspen and drop off a briefcase with ransom money in it. Lloyd sees her drop the briefcase and retrieves it. Problem is, the two people that were sent to get the briefcase see Lloyd take it and follow him home. After Lloyd is fired the same day as his best friend/roommate Harry (Jeff Daniels), the two set out to Aspen to return the briecase. The rest is pretty much a road movie and the film is still as hilarious today as it was 13 years ago (when I first saw it). It certainly wasn't a critical success, but it was a commercial success and is probably the most watched Jeff Daniels movie out there. The original version and unrated version both have high points and some stuff that was placed into the unrated version would have been better off on the cutting room floor, but it's still entertaining and worth a watch from the hardcore "Dumb and Dumber" fans out there.
